SETI: Water Vapor on Europa

| July 19, 2014 | 0 Comments

In this SETI talk Lorenz Roth will present his work on the vapor plumes found on Europa. Vapor on Europa has long been speculated and could possibly provide accessibility of subsurface liquid reservoirs. Possible evidence for this scenario was obtained by the images of auroral emissions obtained in December 2012 by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), which revealed coincident signals from hydrogen and oxygen pointing to the existence of transient water vapor near the moon’s south pole. Dr. Roth will provide an overview of the complex interaction between Europa and Jupiter’s magnetosphere and explain the significance of the discovery of water vapor.
