Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!

| March 1, 2012 | 0 Comments

Most of the people who have read the famous novel by Oscar Wilde called “The Picture of Dorian Gray” share almost identical impression – it has amazing quotes. Quotes about men, women, life, relationships, love and so on. And the quotes are so good that even if you hate the plot of the book you still enjoy reading it. It’s kind of  how I feel about all these different books about Richard Feynman. I’ve read many different books about the life of Feynman, his scientific achievements and his theories and I enjoyed even the bad ones as it’s always interesting and fun to read the quotes of such a remarkable personality.  But this book, which we are going to review, called “Surely you are Joking Mr. Feynman” is one of the good books about Richard Feynman. I like it, because it’s a double treat – it’s both fun and enjoyable, as it has many charming quotes and facts from Feynman’s life, however it’s also serious enough to give you all the important facts that you need. So let’s see what it’s all about.

About the authors

This book was not written by Feynman but since it’s all about him I feel the need to remind the kind readers about who he was. Richard Feynman was a famous American theoretical physicist working in the fields of quantum mechanics, particle physics, quantum electrodynamics and a few others. For his contributons to quantum electrodynamics he received a Nobel Prize jointly with Julian Schwinger and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga in 1965.

Besides his great achievements in physics Feynman is also famous for his charismatic character and he is often called the most quotable physicist of all times.

Ralph Leighton is a biographer, film producer, and friend of the late physicist Richard Feynman. He recorded Feynman relating stories of his life. Leighton has released some of the recordings as The Feynman Tapes. These interviews became the basis for this book.

Short Review

“Surely You’re Joking Mr. Feynman” is a series of anecdotes, thoughts and interviews from the life of Richard Feynman. His ideas and philosophy of life is coded in these entertaining and often humorous stories.

But this book is far much more than that, as it follows the adventures of Richard Feynman. Feynman was the quintessential inquirer whose investigations led him, at times, to sophisticated equations and new theories, at other times to a kind of social mischief that is both entertaining and delightful in its inspiring intellectual courage. So don’t miss this book, even if you’re not into science, as Richard Feynman was not only an incredible scientist but also a remarkable personality.
